Sarasota County has approximately 87,000 water connections, 74,000 sewer connections and 3,000 reuse connections. Our water service began in 1975 and includes: wells along University Parkway (six wells mixed with Manatee County water); wells on the T. Mabry Carlton Jr. Reserve (including our treatment plant that uses electro dialysis reversal processing); Venice Gardens well fields (including our treatment plant that uses reverse osmosis processing); and purchased water from Manatee County and Peace River / Manatee Regional Water Supply Authority.
This exploration of the T. Mabry Carlton Jr. Reserve and the electro dialysis reversal processing plant will provide students a tour of the plant and explanation of the treatment processes that provide our drinking water. The tour will begin with a visit to one of the well heads in the well farm so students can see the vastness of the well farm and understand where the water process begins. Next the tour will provide students with the journey and processes the water will travel in the path to becoming clean drinking water at your home. Each of the purification methods used will be explained how it works and the purpose for each treatment method. The exploration will include a hands on demo/lab to see how the water is tested and purified. The tour will conclude with a visit to the counties Water Utility Command Center where all water facilities and distribution in Sarasota County is monitored and controlled. We will examine the process control and various engineering disciplines needed to implement and maintain such a complex system.
