“BEST!” Body-Energy-Space-Time for Elementary
Sarasota Contemporary Dance (SCD), hailed as Sarasota’s 1st Contemporary Dance Company, consists of a group of not only performers and choreographers but certified teaching artists as well as experienced classroom teachers. SCD recognizes that every student learns differently and that using movement as a vehicle to explore curriculum taught in Florida schools is important for learning and retaining information.
This being said, SCD believes it is highly important to individualize each lesson plan or workshop that it offers. The age and ability of the students as well as what they are currently studying with their classroom teacher determines how the company will approach the workshop and what the goals will be.
Two Sarasota Contemporary Dance teaching artists will have a planning meeting with the classroom teacher to develop the specific science integration lesson that will then be taught in 5 sessions, using the basic elements of dance. Session 1 will begin with Sarasota Contemporary Dance performing a duet piece entitled “When I Dance,” which will introduce the basic elements of dance: Body, Energy, Space, and Time. The students will then be led through a creative exploration incorporating the science components, using dance’s basic elements as the tool for learning and creating vignettes.
The sessions will be broken down into elements: session one Body, session two Energy, session three Space, and session four Time. Session five will be a completion of all the sessions when students will perform their vignettes. Session five would be a great opportunity to invite family and administrators, as well as other classes to observe. This exploration is designed for (but not limited to) five classroom visits and is co-created by Fuzión and the classroom teacher to best serve the needs of the students and the subject matter.
