Biotechnology not only uses biological processes, organisms, or systems to manufacture products to solve real world problems, but also to improve the quality of human life. Osprey Biotechnics invites you to a tour of our facilities followed by a series of hands-on activities, including a Q&A session with our scientists. See first-hand demonstrations from the department experts as per the following two rotations:
Rotation one (20 minute tour):
- Careers include: Microbiologist, Quality Control Manager; Lab Technician
- Hands-on interactive activities involve: Touring of the facilities of Osprey Biotechnics and observing from start to finish what it takes to create products, including deep tank fermentation and stringent quality control.
Rotation two (30 minute session):
- Careers include: Microbiologist; Quality Control Manager; Lab Technician
- Hands-on interactive activities involve: Learning and identifying microbes on plates, viewing spores under a microscope, learning about serial dilution, and observing a demonstration of “streaking on agar”.
- Q&A session with Osprey Biotechnics’ scientists, lab technicians, quality control manager, and other employees.

Field trips provide active learning that reinforce classroom experiences; expose students to real-world workplace environments; and allow explorations of career options. Experiential field trips help students identify their interests, passions, career aspirations and how they see the world. Understanding how classroom lessons translate to career opportunities raises the student’s interest and achievements in their academics. These students filling important needed skill sets in the community create an essential home grown workforce. Biotechnology involves using organisms to create products, and offers a wide range of career opportunities, from sales and marketing to research and development. Biotechnology offers an array of exciting possibilities to students who enjoy science, math, technology, investigating and solving problems and formulating useful products. For example, according to the Sarasota Herald Tribune (June, 2013), Mote Aquaculture Park and Osprey Biotechnics collaborated to formulate pro-biotics “to improve hatchlings’ immunity in the hope that they will increase the percentage of fish that survive adulthood”. When potential biotech/biology students understand the relevance of what they are learning, then two things happen. First, those students understand the need to register for upper level science and math courses in high school; and second, the need for high demand professions are more likely to be filled. When teachers, students, and parents can assess meaningful connections and transfer knowledge from the classroom to the real world, everyone benefits!
