LIFE (Learning in Florida’s Environment) in Sarasota County is an environmental science enrichment program designed for fifth grade to build knowledge, skills, and stewardship among students in Florida through meaningful field experiences. The LIFE program in Sarasota brings students out to public conservation lands for science-based environmental education, and reinforces existing curriculum and Florida standards through hands-on, field labs facilitated by educators, scientists, and land/resource managers. Students participate in 3 field experiences throughout the year, as research has shown that multiple interactions cement concepts and experiences and are more likely to affect long-term change.

Our program provides 3 experiences throughout the year in each of the important local ecosystems. Our current locations for field experiences are Myakka River State Park (freshwater- in the fall), Oscar Scherer State Park (uplands- in the winter), and Lemon Bay County Park (coastal- in the spring). Each experience builds on Florida science standards and begins with a 45 minute in-class preparation with terminology, concepts, and skills practice followed with 3 STEM focused labs per ecosystem/location which occur at public conservation lands within Sarasota County. Field labs provide an opportunity for students to act as wildlife biologists, ornithologists, entomologists, marine scientists, horticulturalists, and more with the hopes of making science and scientific careers more accessible. Labs may also address local environmental issues and how students can affect change by being educated and making choices to support environmental conservation. Teachers are provided with a teacher ehandbook developed for each module that provides background information and post-trip literacy extensions for the classroom. Program is free to schools, except for lunch and transportation.
