In this inquiry-based activity provided by Around the Bend Nature Tours through the Sarasota Audubon Society, students discover the basic characteristics that make an animal a bird, and learn how to use visual clues to identify different species of birds.  Students also learn the basics of using binoculars. Students will discover the agricultural and natural history of the Celery Fields and its importance as a storm water management area for Sarasota County.

Students will perform water quality tests in the field using LaMotte water quality kits. Building on the storm water management, teachers will receive background information about Low Impact Development principals that are used to minimize impacts.

Students will rotate among 3 activities

  • Bird ID with binoculars
  • Nature walk with binoculars
  • Water Quality testing with LaMotte kits
  • Optional – Service Learning project
