In this inquiry-based activity presented by the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program with Around the Bend Nature Tours, students are told a story about “Why the Crab Has No Head”.  Observations are made with live crabs.

Title 1 Schools: As part of the Wild About Literacy Program – the book Wild Beach will be provided to each student in grades K-1.

Students will participate in 3 activities
Each classroom will be active for 1 hour – with 2 classes at a time in rotation.

  • Activity 1 (25 min) Crab Inquiry & Observation with Storytelling
  • Activity 2 (25 min) Sea Treasures and Crab Walk
  • Group finish – both classes together (10 min) – Crab song


Objectives: Students will understand that crabs are wildlife and wildlife comes in a variety of forms – small to large. Students will discover other wildlife that live with crabs under the mangroves. Students will learn about crab anatomy and animal adaptations. Students are responsible for their actions affecting this wildlife. Students will learn what an estuary is, understand the importance of an estuary and observe the unique animals found in and around an estuary.
