In this inquiry-based activity presented by the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program with Around the Bend Nature Tours, students are told a story about “Why the Crab Has No Head”.  Observations are made with live crabs and potentially individual students may handle and release the crabs.

Students will participate in 3 activities:

  • Crab Inquiry with storytelling
  • Shoreline Exploration on Sarasota Bay
  • Mangrove Forest Walk

Objectives: Students will understand that crabs are wildlife and wildlife comes in a variety of forms – small to large. Students will understand that this place is home to wildlife, including crabs. Students will learn about crab anatomy and animal adaptations. Students are responsible for their actions affecting this wildlife. Students will learn what an estuary is, understand the importance of an estuary and observe the unique plants and animals found in and around an estuary.

Sites available for Crab Inquiry:

  • Ken Thompson Park, Sarasota
  • Bay Preserve, Osprey
  • Emerson Point, Palmetto
  • See in-school exploration for program at your school
