This Expanded Exploration utilizes the Estuary Tech Kit as well as a naturalist from Around the Bend Nature Tours to assist teachers with the implementation of this kit. This includes the naturalist coming to the school to train the teacher on the various activities in the kit. As an option, the naturalist can come into the classroom and lead the students in the activities found within the kit, including assisting students in the classifying of organisms that are found in Sarasota Bay.  Students will use various sources to identify and classify these organisms including dichotomous keys, field guides and the Internet.  Students will reflect on how they own actions might affect the health of the bay.

This Tech Kit developed by Around the Bend Nature Tours is available on loan from the Sarasota Bay Estuary P.I.E.R. Program for a period of up to 2 weeks. Students will virtually explore a local estuary with classroom activities. They will identify the plants and animals that live in an estuary and the adjoining mangrove forest and the importance of a clean estuary to our economy. With these activities, students will discover how humans interact and are dependent on the natural world. Not only will students increase their knowledge, they will develop a better appreciation of the natural world and will in turn be more inclined to protect it. Included in the Estuary Exploration Tech Kit:

  • Teacher notebook with lesson plans, worksheet masters and instructions
  • Jump drive with videos, lesson plans, masters
  • All materials needed for the following activities
    • Seagrasses of Sarasota Bay
    • Sarasota Bay Habitats
    • Discovering Mangroves
    • Classifying Sarasota Bay Critters – with dichotomous keys

NOTE: You can reserve the Tech Kit for FREE directly from the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program. Contact
