“Entrepreneurs are seen as economic agents, decision-makers, risk-takers, innovators,

and agents of economic change!” ~Entrepreneur, 2011

Small businesses are the lifeblood of the economy. They are at the forefront in promoting enterprise, innovation, and increased productivity. Small businesses are vitally important because of their role in the supply chain, the competition they stimulate, and the ideas and products they bring to the market place. In addition, entrepreneurs, while forging new pathways, are strongly committed to “giving back” to the communities they serve…whether it be donating money, products, services, volunteerism, or hosting activities for charities and non-profits.

CB’s Saltwater Outfitters falls within this category. Not only is CB’s the largest on-the-water “Bait and Tackle” shop on Siesta Key (Sarasota, Florida), but as an entrepreneurial enterprise CB’s plays a crucial role in meeting the rapidly changing demands of hospitality, leisure, sports, and tourism consumers. The owner/entrepreneur is a driver of change, innovation, and employment in these four areas.

“CB’s Saltwater Outfitters is considered one of Sarasota’s must-see landmarks since 1959,

and a leader in the sportfishing community!”

Hear how CB’s Saltwater Outfitters expanded from a small bait and tackle operation to one that offers boat rentals, fishing charters, and clothing for all ages. In addition, CB’s is one of the few ORVIS ENDORSED (fly fishing) OUTFITTERS in Florida! Such expansion requires both vision and strategic planning by the owner/entrepreneur, accompanied by the hiring of diverse employees who not only possess a variety of skills but also who have the ability to wear multiple hats. Hear about the importance of effective communication, commitment to the job, and going the extra mile. Learn about the importance of software applications, collaboration, and organizational skills. Prepare to me amazed as you come to understand from the “family” of CB’s owners and employees how you can realize your full potential through entrepreneurship and owning your own business.

Most students, be it in middle school or high school, struggle with choosing careers they are interested in. Those who do have an idea of what careers they would like to pursue believe that they must make a choice between passions…for example, choosing careers that involve business as opposed to choosing careers that involve the outdoors. At CB’s Saltwater Outfitters, a real-world workplace, students will come to understand that occupational and personal interests can be combined.

Understanding the connections between the desired career paths, personal interests, and what is being taught in the classroom are essential to both increased student achievement and to the development of a trained and passionate community-based workforce. Relevance is key! When teachers, students, and parents can assess meaningful connections and transfer that knowledge from class to real world, everyone benefits.
