“My heart went out to her (Winter), and I thought we could probably put a tail on her.” ~ Kevin Carroll

Remember Winter…the baby dolphin who lost her tail to a crab trap? It was Hanger Clinic that came to the rescue! The real-life survival movie, Dolphin Tale, featured Winter and here innovative prosthetic team, Sarasota-based Dan Strzempka and Orlando-based Kevin Carroll. Their greatest challenge? Figuring how to keep the tail on and how to propel a 400 pound dolphin 10 feet into the air (see for history and  cam link)!

“NO is not a possibility!”

Let’s talk about Katy Sullivan! Katy, who was born without legs, is now a competitive runner who participates in events such as Challenged Athletes Triathlon and the UCO Endeavor Games. Or hear how army veteran, Staff SGT, Heath Calhoun, who lost both legs above the knee when a rocket-propelled grenade explodes his Humvee, later became an Alpine skier who earned a silver medal in the Sitting Giant Slalom at the 2014 winter games in Sochi!

After being introduced to the passionate staff, and viewing an inspiring and empowering video, prepare to be emotionally and intellectually impacted as you engage in the following three rotations:

Rotation one (30 minute rotation): Administration (Careers include Medical Office Administrator, Bookkeeper, Accountant)

Students will participate in an informative “card” game  that will help students to understand the financial challenges faced by amputees, insurance and cost information, support systems that can be provided and, so very critical, the teamwork required to make any medical enterprise a success.

Rotation two (30 minute rotation):  Clinical Demonstrations (Careers include Certified Prosthetist, Certified Orthotist)

Students will not only learn about the different types of orthotics and associated electronics and software, but may also have an amazing opportunity to put on and operate a prosthetic arm.

Rotation three: (30 minute rotation): Prosthetics Construction (Careers include Orthotic and Prosthetic Technicians)

Students, as they manually assemble prosthetic devices,  will learn how prosthetic devices are made from beginning to end.

Field trips provide active learning that reinforces classroom experiences; exposes students to real-world workplace environments; and allows explorations of career options. Experiential field trips give students knowledge of their interest and career aspirations, and how they see the world. Relevance is a key! Understanding the connections between what is being taught and career aspirations are essential to both increased student achievement as well as to the development of a trained community-based workforce. For example, physics plays a crucial role in constructing prosthetics. The certified orthotist or prosthetist must consider forces and dynamics, Newton’s Laws, and Energy when designing and constructing the orthotic devices ( When students interested in prosthetics orthotics understand the importance of physics, then two things happen. First, those students understand the need to register for upper level science courses in high school; and, the need for high demand professions may be filled. When teachers, students, and parents can assess meaningful connections and transfer that knowledge from class to real world, everyone benefits.

THE EDUCATION FOUNDATION OF SARASOTA COUNTY is serving as the coordinating organization for the EdExploreSRQ Interactive (or Experiential) Career Series.
