Come and join the circus! This exciting exploration for second grade students exposes students to life on the road with a great American circus. Students will learn about the history, the characters, and the huge task of operating the greatest shows on earth. Student workbooks tie the spectacle of the circus into second grade curriculum, using the circus to teach reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and visual and performing arts. Teachers will guide students through two circus museums including learning stops at the magnificent model circus, dazzling and descriptive circus posters, original circus wagons and John and Mable Ringling’s private Pullman railcar the Wisconsin. Students will also have the opportunity to try their hand at traditional circus performances in the Tibbals Learning Center including squeezing into a model clown car, walking a tight rope, wowing audiences as a Ring Master, and learning how clowns apply their makeup.

The exploration continues with an at-school experience facilitated by The Circus Arts Conservatory. Students will feel connected to Sarasota’s rich circus heritage, and will learn to apply classroom skills to the real-life setting of the circus. To schedule the in-school circus performance component, please contact the Circus Arts Conservatory.
